Carl Jones, the co-creator of the Freaknik musical created in 2010, addressed criticisms that the show was akin to "animated blackface." He expressed confusion over critics' charges that the comedy was "nothing more than animated blackface," noting that he aims to tell the truth in his productions and accepts that it may offend some. Carl defended the musical, observing that it offered smart commentary and a strong story about a group of friends on a cross-country journey. He further added that many artists, such as Charlie Murphy and Snoop Dogg, had wanted to be a part of this show. He also acknowledged the pressure to create more positive portrayals of black characters in Hollywood but cautioned against creating flawless or untrue characters for the sake of appeasing idealistic views. He believes this pandering won't stand the test of time and fails to reflect society or culture accurately.
