Fred "The Hammer" Williamson spoke about the term ‘blaxploitation,’ suggesting it was a Hollywood creation to belittle the success and draw audiences’ attention away from black-led films that were flourishing at the time. Williamson took a stand against race-based labeling by taking out an ad stating he was not a black actor but simply an actor. He compared himself to Clint Eastwood and John Wayne, lamenting the focus on his racial identity. Williamson also challenged Hollywood's portrayal of black stars as sensitive, non-confrontational characters, emphasizing the need for a variety of roles. Lastly, "The Hammer" shared his unyielding start-of-project stipulations: he can't be killed in a movie, he has to win fights, and he gets the girl if he wants her.
