Mayor Andre Dickens expressed concern over the closure of a popular supermarket in southeast Atlanta after a portion of its parking lot collapsed on Saturday morning. The Publix supermarket, which had only recently opened, was a vital resource for many residents in the neighborhood.
Paula Sero spoke with residents in the community and found that the closure of the supermarket has created challenges for those who live in food deserts, where access to fresh groceries is limited. Kanisha Control, who lives in East Atlanta, noted that her closest grocery store is a 10-minute drive away, making it difficult to access food.
Mayor Dickens acknowledged the impact on safety and access to food and pharmacy services in the community and mentioned that there is no exact timeline for a resolution. The companies involved are reviewing the possibility of partially re-opening the store and parking garage. Attempts to contact Publix for comment were unsuccessful. The property owner, Branch Properties, stated that an unauthorized crane truck drove onto the upper level of the parking deck, surpassing weight limits. Authorities are investigating the incident.
