In a previous interview, Akon shared his thoughts on slavery and his understanding of it in Senegal. He mentioned that Senegal has moved beyond the concept, only ever referring to it during certain tours. Vlad acknowledged the ongoing tension between African and African American narratives around slavery. Michael Blackson agreed with some of Akon's points but added that African nations were mainly colonized by different global powers, indirectly setting the stage for slavery. Raised in West Africa, he struggled to understand why he wasn’t taught about slavery in school, leading him to believe that African nations have been brainwashed by colonizers to forget their own history. Both Vlad and Michael emphasized the importance for African Americans to visit Africa, learn about their roots, and see where they came from, celebrating initiatives like those by Ghana to encourage this reconnecting journey.
