On September 14, a high-school band director in Birmingham, Alabama, was tasered by police after a dispute arose between the band and officers. The incident occurred after a football game between Jackson-Olin High School and Minor High School. According to police, both bands were still playing as they were trying to clear the stadium. The Jackson-Olin band stopped playing when asked, but the Minor High band did not. Bodycam footage showed the band director, Johnny Mims, arguing with the police before being restrained and ultimately tasered. Mims was charged with disorderly conduct, harassment, and resisting arrest. The Birmingham Police Department stated that an internal investigation is ongoing.

In response to the incident, Birmingham Police Chief Scott Thurman has met with the mayor, city leadership, and school superintendents to address the situation. The police department is releasing the body-worn camera footage to the general public and media partners to promote transparency and open dialogue. The incident is currently being investigated by the Birmingham Police Department's Internal Affairs division, as they strive to maintain a positive relationship with the community.
