In a recent interview with filmmaker Albert Hughes, the impact of American Me, a gangster film from the 90s was discussed. Both Hughes and the interviewer, Vlad, agree that the film is one of the greatest hood films ever, even over classics such as Menace II Society and Boyz n the Hood. The film was based on a true story, but details were altered for the movie, leading to some serious repercussions - about ten people ended up getting killed over the film, including six in prison. The film greatly impacted Hughes and inspired him to make his script for Menace II Society harder, consequently enhancing its reality and potency. An anecdote was related about rapper Eazy-E being potentially cast as a character in Menace to Society, however, this did not go forward due to Eazy-E's decision to work on his own projects.
