Part 8: Albert Hughes: 2Pac was Too Big of a Movie Star to Take Small Role in Menace II Society
Part 1: Albert Hughes on How They Came Up with the Title to "Menace II Society"

--------

Filmmaker Albert Hughes discussed Tupac's involvement with the film "Menace II Society." Tupac attached himself to the film even before the deal with Inside Party was done. Although he wasn't a platinum artist at the time, having starred in 'Juice' and 'Poetic Justice,' his rising star power played a significant role in securing the deal. Tupac was initially set to play Shareef, a nonviolent character. However, during rehearsals he expressed dissatisfaction with the limited development of his character's backstory and role. Hughes reflects on the conflict, stating that with maturity and hindsight, he believes Tupac's issues with the role may have stemmed from feeling it was beneath his growing status in both music and film. Hughes pointed out that they were all young, both in age and experience with fame and money during that time, which could have contributed to miscommunications and tensions.
