--------
John "Boxer" Mendoza shed light on the origins and dynamics of the Northern California-based Nuestra Familia gang and explained the gang's complex relationship with the Mexican Mafia. Initially, members of the Nuestra Familia were not connected to geography or the Mexican Mafia, but rather to their beliefs. However, as time went on, a divide occurred based on geography. Anything south of Bakersfield was considered recruiting grounds for the Mexican Mafia, while the area north was for Nuestra Familia. The ongoing rivalry, often referred to as the "Shoe War," began over a conflict in 1965 and still persists today, particularly on the streets.
