Part 1: Lavar Ball on Growing Up in South Central LA Around Crips & Bloods, Never Joining a Gang

--------

Lavar Ball, father of professional basketball players Lonzo, LiAngelo, and LaMelo, had a unique approach to training his sons from an early age. Going against conventional athletic training, he initiated physically competitive activities as part of their everyday life, often replacing traditional home furnishings with training equipment and encouraging a highly competitive environment. Lavar chose basketball as the boys' main sport due to the potential for early involvement rather than having to wait for physical maturation in other sports. The boys played in various leagues, often competing against much older opponents. Despite their young age and smaller size, their skill level and speed allowed them to compete at high levels. Lavar believes that the age difference forced them to be smarter and increase their skill level, which helped their success in competitive sports.
