In an ingenious new trend, scammers are using cellphone Bluetooth technology to hack into gas pumps and steal fuel for free. This sophisticated scam involves the scammer overriding the gas pump system using their cellphone's Bluetooth connection. Once they gain control, they can pump as much gas as they want without paying a dime.
Recently, a Detroit man managed to steal almost 800 gallons of gas from a Shell station using this method. He simply opened the pump remotely using his phone, and cars would line up to fill up their tanks as he controlled the pump. The clerks inside the gas station were unable to stop the theft, even when they tried to shut off specific pumps. In the end, they had to shut down the entire system to put an end to the scam, losing almost $3,000 in stolen gas.
This is not an isolated incident. Similar thefts have been reported at other gas stations as well. In some cases, scammers distract clerks inside the gas station while their accomplice steals gas from the pump. The scammers are finding new and creative ways to exploit vulnerabilities in gas station systems, putting a strain on the owners who struggle to combat these thefts.
