Part 1: Albert Hughes on How They Came Up with the Title to "Menace II Society"
--------
Albert & Allen Hughes shared their experience around the creation of the popular 1999 documentary, "American Pimp." According to the brothers, the idea for their film was stolen by a close friend, who went on to create and release a similar film first. Despite coping with this betrayal, the Hughes brothers persisted in creating their own project, pitching it to powerful figures in the film industry, including Sheila Nevins of HBO and Bob and Harvey Weinstein. Reflections on the racism during their pitch at the Sundance Film Festival were also revealed - distributors kicked out normal attendees to watch their footage, only to criticize and dismiss it due to its portrayal of an African-American man with white women. The experience, as per Albert and Allen, was the lowest point in their career, but they remained strong, shedding light on the systemic racial bias in the film industry.
