--------
In this clip, John "Boxer" Mendoza opens up about the harsh realities of living by the 14 fundamental bonds of the gang. He emphasized the necessity to adhere to these bonds as the guiding conduct and expectations within the movement. These bonds also include a "plate," which documents the history and direction of the group or movement. Also touched on were the perils of being a 'new recruit,' often tasked with missions others are reluctant to carry out, providing a test of devotion and courage. Mendoza shared his past experiences that involved several violent episodes, including a series of stabbings he engaged in during the 'Portland Shoe Wars,' and the usual mechanism of prison punishments if caught. Addressing the issue of assault in prisons, he indicated that occurrences were linked both to the vulnerability of the individual and the prevailing environment.
