Last month, a serial shoplifter, identified as Kendall Lavamon Burton (38), entered Appian Food and Liquor in El Sobrante, California (located in the Bay Area) before attempting to commit his third robbery of the day.  But he was met with resistance when a store clerk named Suraj tried to prevent the unlawfulness from occurring once again. This is interesting because a bill recently passed in California prevents employees from confronting shopfitters for their safety. Consequently, brazen robbers are on the rise and people are fed up with the spike in criminal activity.

Unfortunately, Suraj's encounter with Burton served as a horrific example of why the legislation has become such a highly debated topic in recent months. In response to Suraj's heroics, the shoplifter doused him with lighter fluid and set him on fire. The attack left the victim with second and third-degree burns all over his upper body. Burton has since been arrested and charged with six felonies, including assault with a deadly weapon, arson causing bodily injury, robbery, and more.
