In late June, the camps representing Canelo Álvarez (60-2) and Jermall Charlo (32-0) agreed to terms on a September 16th fight under the PBC banner. However, in the following weeks, Jermall backed out of the fight despite the fact that he is undefeated. Instead, he opted for his brother, Jermell Charlo (35-2), to take on boxing's first undisputed super middleweight champion. Jermall explained the puzzling move by outlining the financial benefits that his twin brother could gain in a mega-fight with Canelo.
“I’ll tell you the real stuff," Jermall said. "I signed a contract with Canelo too, but I gave it to my brother first so we both make money. We’re going to both make money. I didn’t really want to go on a live, but I gave the fight to my f***ing brother, okay? Y’all are mad at me? I gave the fight to my brother. Let my brother fight, my brother got to go up two weight classes. I want to fight the motherf***er, but it is what is it.”
Unfortunately for Jermall, his plan to share the spotlight with Jermell resulted in a bludgeoning at the hands of Canelo last weekend at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The champ dominated Jermell Charlo with a unanimous decision, along the way forcing Jermell to take a knee in the seventh round with a powerful overhand right.
In the aftermath of Canelo's win over Jermell, his twin brother Jermall recently revealed that his kids are getting bullied in school because of the highly publicized loss.
