Created with famed production duo Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, the album was a hit, reaching number 12 on the Billboard charts and achieving double platinum status. Gill stated that during the creation of the album, he didn't concern himself with the sales numbers. Instead, he noted the positive public response and recognized how the album’s music significantly contributed to his rising popularity. Gill recalled how fans poured into in-store appearances, particularly in his hometown of D.C., as evidence of the album's success.
