In a recent progress report, Los Angeles County Supervisors Janice Hahn and Hilda Solis, along with Sheriff Robert Luna, discussed the success of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Organized Retail Theft Task Force. This task force has been cracking down on the smash-and-grab trend that has been plaguing Southland stores, malls, and outlets.
Since its operation began, the task force has already made nearly 100 arrests in just a few weeks. Sheriff Luna emphasized that anyone involved in organized retail theft, from those who steal from stores to the drivers of getaway cars, will be arrested. This message is especially important as the holiday season approaches.
Organized retail theft has become all too common in recent times, with criminals entering stores and stealing large quantities of merchandise. These stolen goods often end up being sold for profit elsewhere. The Citadel Outlets owner, Steve Craig, has experienced this theft firsthand and understands the impact it has on businesses.
The task force has achieved significant success in the first five weeks of operation. They have made numerous arrests, recovered six firearms, and served 52 search warrants. They have also managed to recover $370,000 worth of stolen merchandise. This progress has been possible thanks to the $15.6 million grant secured by both supervisors from the state.
The grant money will go towards training for law enforcement involved in the task force and new technology to aid their efforts. The task force is working closely with the business community, establishing better communication with store owners and managers. They are determined to hold these repeat offenders accountable for their actions.
However, one challenge the task force faces is dealing with repeat offenders. Sheriff Luna acknowledges that several of the individuals arrested are repeat offenders and that it is crucial to put enough pressure on prosecutors and judges to ensure they are held accountable.
While the task force is making significant progress, there are challenges, such as the recent 0 bail policy in some cities in LA County. Despite these difficulties, authorities remain determined to tackle organized retail theft and protect businesses from this crime wave.
