Music legend Johnny Gill expressed his satisfaction with the execution of the New Edition biopic, calling it the best TV biopic he has ever seen. The three-part miniseries had been a work in progress for 11 years before its release. Gill praised the biopic's comprehensive depiction of all the band members and applauded actor Luke James for his portrayal of himself. Discussing the viewership, Gill noted that the premiere attracted 4.2 million viewers, the highest for a BET premiere since 2012. The final episode also reportedly had about 4 million viewers. The singer gave a shout-out to actor Wood Harris, commending his immersive acting in the miniseries.
