In August 2007, Tim Donaghy, a former NBA referee, appeared in a Brooklyn federal court to plead guilty to conspiracy to engage in wire fraud and transmitting wagering information through interstate commerce. His lawyer alleged that Donaghy could have possibly won the case had he chosen to fight it, but the fear of harsh sentencing led him to opt for a guilty plea instead. While he was initially threatened with a potentially 25-year prison sentence, Donaghy explained he mostly feared the mob connections that had become entangled in his illegal activities. Following his cooperation with the FBI, Donaghy was placed under constant surveillance to ensure his safety. He revealed the coded language used to place bets and exchange information and debunked exaggerated claims of a $300,000 gain from his illegal activities. To this day, Donaghy enumerates his regret over the choices he made.
