Part 1: Tim Donaghy on Becoming an NBA Referee, Making $300K a Year
--------
Former NBA referee Tim Donaghy opened up about his experience following a scandal that rocked the NBA. He admitted to the financial penalties he faced, which included restitution totaling around $219,000, as well as the personal repercussions, such as his family life falling apart and serving time in prison. In prison, he began writing a book about his experiences. Originally titled "Blowing the Whistle: The Culture of Fraud in the NBA," it was later renamed "Personal Foul" and faced significant publication challenges due to fears of an NBA lawsuit. Despite criticisms about the validity of the information in his book, Donaghy stands by his account, noting a supervisory special agent for the FBI vouched for its contents. Donaghy ended up suing his publisher, BTI Group, for breach of contract and won $1.8 million. Despite everything, he claims his experiences haven’t tarnished his love for the sport.
