Joe Smith, originally from Norfolk, Virginia, shared his backstory and revealed that his parents weren’t married, so he inherited his mother’s last name. Smith’s siblings would joke about him being a “mistake baby” due to his mother being roughly 37 at the time of his birth. Vlad asked Smith why he hadn’t taken his dad’s name, to which Smith replied it wasn’t his decision. He had a good relationship with his dad despite not living with him. Smith recounted his experience growing up amidst violence and drug use in the neighborhood, but thanks to a strict mother and protective siblings, he managed to stay clear of it. Smith notes that his hometown was full of talented athletes, some of whom unfortunately got caught up in that lifestyle and squandered their opportunities. Initially passionate about football, Smith ultimately chose basketball due to his height (6'9") and turned it into a successful career.
