Retired NBA player Joe Smith detailed how he was a victim of check forgery committed by former Love & Hip Hop cast member Monique Slaughter. After his divorce and retirement, Smith began noticing money rapidly disappearing from his bank account, and it was his financial advisor who first alerted him to nine checks totaling $109,000, which were written to an unknown associate of Slaughter's, Timothy Carr. Smith hired a private investigator, who found evidence of Slaughter cashing the checks. However, when Smith tried to file charges, he was denied, as the authorities claimed it was a "he said, she said" situation, with Slaughter arguing that Smith had given her permission to write the checks. Despite strong evidence – including different handwriting on the fraudulent checks – no charges were filed, and Smith has yet to recover the stolen funds.
