Nicholas Irving shared insight into the common practice of hip-hop artists employing their neighborhood friends as bodyguards. According to Irving, this decision is dangerous since it turns a trustworthy friend into a potential liability due to lack of professional training and the risk of irrational, uncontrolled behavior in high-pressure situations. Professional security's main goal, he emphasized, should be to de-escalate any issues, not aggravate them further, which could endanger the protection of the artist as well as escalate potential lawsuits or other legal issues. Lastly, Irving pointed out that this ill-advised tactic puts the artist's assets and career at risk, putting them, their hired friends, and their families back into precarious financial situations. Hence, to ensure their safety and career longevity, he strongly suggested artists hire trained professionals rather than relying on their homeboys for security.
