Young Thug's defense attorney, Brian Steel, outlined in his opening statement to the YSL trial on Tuesday (November 28).

While speaking to the courtroom, Steel stated that Young Thug is just an artist who used his music to escape "an environment, a community, a society that was filled with depression, despair, hopelessness, and helplessness." He detailed the humble beginnings of Young Thug's life, and Steel also hit back at the prosecution's claims that Young Thug is the leader of a violent gang.

Steel stated, "He is not running this criminal street gang in Cleveland Avenue area of ‘Bleveland,’ to gain property, money or power. Jeffery Williams did it on will and hard work and determination without anybody’s help except for the people from that area who he will not turn his back on. He’s not sitting there telling people to kill people,” Steel added. “He doesn’t need their money. Jeffery is worth tens of millions of dollars."

Steel went on to state that Young Thug's rap name was inspired by 2Pac's song "PYT (Playa Young Thugs)," and he added that it stands for "Truly Humble Under God." As far as the "YSL" name, Steel stated that it was inspired by the Yves Saint Laurent fashion brand. You can hear more above.
