In this clip, Hector Berrellez spoke to VladTV about the various ways cartels smuggle drugs into the U.S. He spoke about sophisticated tunnel systems equipped with lighting and other infrastructure. These dynamics have changed with the increased legality of marijuana in the U.S. Now, the cartels grow marijuana within the U.S., even owning many of the growers in California. In addition, they reportedly finance the opening of dispensaries under the name of legitimate citizens while controlling the bulk of the profits. High levels of cartel violence in Mexico and corrupt alliances with political parties and army generals further complicate the situation. The potential solution would involve tackling pervasive corruption, requiring both Mexican and American political will and potentially military intervention.
