South Korea's liberal opposition leader Lee Jae-myun was stabbed in the neck during a campaign stop in the southeastern city of Busan on Tuesday (January 2).
Lee, 59, the head of the main opposition Democratic Party, was airlifted to a hospital, and he's reportedly recovering at an intensive care unit at the Seoul National University Hospital following a two-hour operation. Party spokesperson Kwon Chil-seung told reporters that Lee’s jugular vein was damaged and that he had a medical procedure called revascularization.
Senior Busan police officer Sohn Jae-han later revealed in a press briefing that the attacker approached Lee and asked for an autograph before stabbing him in the neck. The attacker's name wasn't revealed, but he is said to be a 67-year-old man.
