Recently in a Las Vegas courtroom, a defendant named Deobra Delone Redden, launched himself over the bench and attacked the judge, Mary K Holus.
The incident took place during Redden's sentencing for attempted battery, after he pleaded guilty to the charge. At first, he appeared reasonable, asking for a break, and stating that he shouldn't be sent to prison. However, the judge noted his extensive criminal history, including convictions for robberies and battery, which led her to deny his plea for probation.
What followed was a chaotic scene as Ren made a flying leap over the bench, while court officers scrambled to protect the judge. Four minutes later, Judge Holus reappeared, clearly shaken by the attack. Ren's foster mother, Karen Springer, revealed in an exclusive interview with Inside Edition that he was off his medication during the incident.
Redden's outburst not only highlights the dangerous potential of defendants with a history of violence but also underscores the risks that judges face in their line of work. Judge Glenda Hatchet, a well-known TV judge, expressed her concern about the incident, emphasizing that it easily could have been much worse.
While Judge Holus wasn't severely injured, a court officer suffered a head injury and had to be taken to the hospital. The incident raises questions about court security and the measures in place to protect judges and courtroom personnel.
Officials have rescheduled another hearing for Redden next Tuesday, with many agreeing that he poses a significant threat. The shocking video of the attack has captured public attention, prompting discussions about courtroom safety and the challenges faced by those in the legal system.
