After release from Rikers, Teddy Atlas was facing a possible ten-year sentence and a life filled with street fights and trouble. His childhood friend, Kevin, a recent New York Golden Gloves winner, offered Teddy a lifeline. Kevin was training at Catskill with legendary boxing trainer Cus D'Amato and proposed for Teddy to join him in training as he awaited trial, hoping to help keep him out of trouble. Following consideration of Teddy's case, D'Amato agreed to Teddy moving to Catskill. While Teddy himself questioned his character given his past actions, D'Amato identified the strength behind his refusal to rat out others in his past and believed it could be the building blocks for a potentially successful future in boxing.
