A South Florida woman, Atoya Holmes, was sentenced to 13 years in prison and two years of community control for fatally shooting her boyfriend, Verdell Goins, during an argument in 2021. Holmes, initially facing a second-degree murder charge, was found guilty of a lesser manslaughter charge by a jury in October. During her sentencing, Holmes tearfully confessed to pulling the trigger, citing a "toxic relationship" as a contributing factor. The incident occurred after a Miami Dolphins game when an argument escalated, leading Holmes to shoot Goins twice with her registered gun. Prosecutors revealed Holmes' possessive behavior and obsession with Goins, who was dating another woman. Despite Holmes' plea for mercy, the judge imposed the sentence based on evidence of her actions and lack of belief in her trial testimony. Once released, Holmes is required to attend anger management courses.
