News broke that Universal Music Group may be pulling their music from TikTok after failing to agree to a new deal relating to artists being paid from the platform. The deal is reportedly ending at midnight on Wednesday (January 31), with UMG no longer licensing music to the app.
Russ, who has been outspoken about the industry, reacted to the situation on X, writing, "They say it’s because 'our songwriters and artists aren’t being compensated fairly' when really it’s their own pockets they’re worried about curious if UMG asked the artists if they agree with this decision to remove their music from the most influential platform for music also like I said earlier, a label stomping its feet because they’re not being compensated 'fairly' for the music they own is hilarious."
He added, "No ones sayin the rates shouldn’t improve but labels acting like they’re looking out for the artists when really they themselves just want more $ is misleading and they’re tryna gaslight by cosplaying as some 'protector' of their artists btw, if they cared about their artists they themselves would pay the artist more and allow the music to be on the platform that’s impacting streams the most (outside of faking streams)."
