Attorneys for Jussie Smollett submitted a plea to the Illinois Supreme Court, asking for their intervention in the case stemming from Smollett's fabricated allegations of being a target of a hate crime in Chicago in 2019. Smollett’s team wants to have his 2021 conviction for multiple felony counts of disorderly conduct looked at again.
In an effort to challenge the conviction on felony disorderly conduct charges, Smollett's attorney has formally requested the state's highest court to review the matter. Their argument centers around the contention that the special prosecutor's handling of the case poses a major risk to the stability of agreements between defendants and prosecutors, potentially causing widespread disruption.
In the filing, Smollett’s lawyer, Nenye Uche, said, “What should have been a straightforward case has been complicated by the intersection of politics and public outrage.” Uche continued, “The dismissal of the Petitioner’s charges, after his complete performance, resulted from a collaborative effort and agreement reached between the State and the Petitioner.” If Smollett’s case doesn’t hold up at the Supreme Court, the actor will have to return to jail to finish his sentence's remains.
