According to Kirkland, the film includes a scene where two women are kissing, implying they had a relationship, which led to Boosie leaving the theater with his daughter. Kirkland expressed understanding about Boosie's reaction due to the child's age but disagreed with the notion that the scene was offensive. Kirkland also commented on Hollywood's tendencies to greenlight particular types of films and emphasized his approval of the updated 'Color Purple' version, which he said is musical and very different from the original.
