--------

Former New York Mets player Darryl Strawberry spoke about his childhood and how he got involved in playing baseball. He grew up in South Central with his single mother and four siblings. From a young age, he recognized his talent in sports but lacked a supportive father figure to nurture his gift. He did not start playing baseball until he was around 14 years old, when he was encouraged by friends at school. Despite his late start, his talent was quickly recognized due to his prowess at the plate and on the mound. He went to Crenshaw High School, known for producing professional athletes. His talent on the field soon caught the attention of professional teams, and he was drafted as the number one pick by the New York Mets while still in high school in 1980.
