Part 1: Darryl Strawberry on Growing Up in Crenshaw Around Gangs & Violence
--------
Former Major League Baseball outfielder Darryl Strawberry shared details regarding his career trajectory from entering the minor leagues, touting substantial talent, to becoming the National League's Rookie of the Year in 1983. He credits much of this success to the guidance he received from senior players and coaches, notably his coach, Jim Fry. However, these early experiences were also tainted by conflict with teammates. Recalling a mid-career incident during a picture day with Mets team captain Keith Hernandez in 1989, Strawberry discussed butting heads over contract negotiations. Furthermore, Strawberry noted a similar misunderstanding with second baseman Wally Backman, in which he firmly addressed media remarks with declarations of his readiness to fight him if needed. Strawberry stressed that such tensions, while inevitable in a sports team, need to be resolved for effective performance.
