Former military sniper Nicholas Irving criticized politicians' wartime rhetoric in a recent interview, accusing them of using veterans for political gain. During the politically-charged presidential season, Irving said politicians only "tell you what you want to hear to get this vote," implying that their concern for veterans is insincere. The exception, Irving claimed, was Donald Trump, which he said drastically improved services for veterans by allowing them to seek help from private doctors, with the bill footed by the Veterans Affairs (VA). Since Trump's term, Irving alleged, standards have slipped. He said people have been resorting to self-harm in VA parking lots due to their inability to get help and says that aid has been lax compared to Trump's administration. The veteran further questioned United States military activity, citing unaccountability and deception in military engagement in Iraq and Afghanistan.
