Nicholas Irving, a former special operations sniper, explained the strategy behind target selection, emphasizing the role of demoralization. Irving stated that the sniper ethos, "Without warning, without remorse," means that snipers don't offer warnings to their targets and should not feel guilt for their actions due to the necessity of their role. However, Irving stressed that it's human to experience remorse. He added on target selection that though, as a sniper, he'd receive a package on the history of the target before missions, ultimately, it wasn't his job to question these briefings. He further revealed an unusual target priority: faced with four targets, a machine gunner, rocket guy, medic, and chaplain, the sniper would first eliminate the latter to demoralize the enemy troops. This tactic, Irving maintains, showcases the merciless nature of the sniper role.
