Former US Army sniper Nicholas Irving discussed the harrowing realities of one of his deployments, revealing that his battalion killed over 1,000 people in three months. He recounted a particular kill that shook him, as he had to engage a combatant while hearing his mother crying in the background. After killing the armed combatant, the troops typically documented the event by taking photos of the body alongside their weapons. However, Irving emphasized that the photographic evidence wasn't a form of trophy keeping but was meant to confirm kills and rule out unlawful killings. Irving admitted to keeping a photo of a kill where he took a close-range shot, not as a memento but as a practical learning aid for improving his shooting accuracy.
