--------

Former Yankees player Darryl Strawberry reflects on winning two World Series in 1996 and 1998. Defying critics who suggested his skills had diminished, Strawberry revealed his performance on-field spoke for his capabilities. He attributes his success in part to coach Joe Torre, who believed in his talent and encouraged him to persist despite the negativity. Strawberry’s victory was bittersweet as in October 1999, at 36, he was diagnosed with colon cancer. Unaware of a tumor growing within him, he was experiencing weight loss and frequent bouts of bloody mucous, which he initially dismissed. After telling his trainer about his condition at the end of the season, he underwent testing, leading to a shocking discovery of a tumor in his colon. He had to forego playoffs that year for a major surgical operation. Post-surgery, Strawberry struggled through a five-year chemo treatment period, vowing to fight against his illness and return to the game.
