Recently, Saweetie spoke about experiences she had in the music industry related to how executives felt she should market herself, noting the advice was in favor of her as a woman in the space.

While speaking to Allure, Saweetie spoke about her rise to the spotlight after her first few songs dropped. “‘Icy Grl’ and ‘My Type’ blew up so quick, I was on the market almost immediately. So I didn’t have time to develop,” said the rapper.

She continued speaking on advice she got about trying to develop, saying, “I was told I should twerk more on my Instagram. I was told that my voice was very boring. I was told that I rapped too monotone and needed more energy. I was told that I needed to share more of my life on the internet.”

Saweetie then said “I’m going to twerk when I want to. That’s not going to be my marketing. And if that’s what you truly love to do, then empower yourself through that.” She then panned the suggestion from executives to do that, calling it “lazy marketing.”
