Ex-military sniper Nicholas Irving shared his perspective on self-defense. While Irving acknowledged he'd never engaged in hand-to-hand combat himself, he relayed stories from colleagues who had. However, when asked about self-defense in civilian situations, Irving's first advice was to walk away. He emphasized the unpredictability of the other person's mental state or potential for violence. Should self-defense become necessary, Irving suggested carrying something like pepper spray for protection. If left unarmed, he stressed the importance of targeting vulnerable parts of the body, such as the groin, solar plexus, or throat. He also underlined that defending oneself should never be fair or polite but rather raw and ruthless. And yet, before resorting to any form of physical attack, Irving recommended trying peaceful resolutions, like seeking help or informing an authority figure. Irrespective of the situation, his advice was: "It should never be a fair fight."
