Donnell Rawlings elaborated how the widely famed Rick James skit in the "Chappelle's Show" almost didn't make it due to Comedy Central’s reserve around its length as well as their doubts about Charlie Murphy's comedic potential. Rawlings emphasized that due to his role as the warm-up comic, he would hype the crowd before each show, which is why audiences would cheer whenever he appeared in a sketch. Rawlings also played an active part in the infamous Rick James skit and shared his belief in the specialness of the segment from its infancy. In spite of initial doubts, Charlie Murphy’s true Hollywood stories in the sketch comedy show went on to solidify Murphy's name in comedy and audiences’ hearts, with Rawlings noting its role in reframing him from "Eddie Murphy’s brother" to 'Charlie Murphy' before his untimely passing.
