The recent verdict in the trial of Hannah Gutierrez-Reed has brought closure to a tragic chapter in the entertainment industry. Gutierrez-Reed, who was the armorer on the set of the movie "Rust," was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the fatal shooting of Halyna Hutchins, the film's cinematographer. She was, however, acquitted of tampering with evidence.
The trial, which lasted nearly two weeks, shed light on the reckless environment that existed on the New Mexico film set. Witnesses described a culture of negligence, with prop guns left unattended and safety protocols not being followed. Dave Halls, the assistant director who handed the prop gun loaded with live ammunition to Alec Baldwin, testified that he spoke to Halyna Hutchins after the shooting and she told him she couldn't feel her legs.
The prosecutor argued that Gutierrez-Reed was negligent and careless in her handling of the weapons on set, ultimately leading to the tragic death of Hutchins. Defense attorney Jason Bowles, however, placed the blame squarely on Baldwin, who he claimed went off script and pointed the weapon that ultimately fired the fatal shot.
Gutierrez-Reed now faces up to 18 months in prison for her role in the shooting.
