Part 1: Joey Merlino, Rumored Boss of Philly Mafia, Says He Doesn't Know Anything About the Mafia
--------
Joey Merlino discussed his experiences with the American criminal justice system. On charges of extortion, he was convicted following the testimony of some bookmakers claiming to have been extorted by him. According to Merlino, they did this in an attempt to evade jail time themselves. Although he was concerned with the violent crime charges, he had no qualms about his conviction for illegal gambling and receiving stolen property. Merlino was subsequently given a 14-year sentence, and afterward, he was indicted for the 1996 murder of Joseph Sudano just a month after the verdict. Despite being tried twice for this latter charge, once in Philly and again in Newark, Merlino was acquitted both times. He alleges the prosecution's obsession with him led to his repeated indictments.
