New Orleans Police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick revealed that rats are infiltrating the evidence room at NOPD headquarters and consuming drugs, including marijuana. The building is deteriorating due to issues like rat and roach infestations, lack of air conditioning, and malfunctioning elevators. Kirkpatrick highlighted the unsuitable working conditions for employees, with staff sometimes finding rat droppings on their desks. This environment further diminishes morale within the already depleted police department.

In response, the city is seeking a new space for the headquarters to ensure evidence safety and improve working conditions. A 10-year lease for a new building was approved, costing over $670,000 annually in rent. Gilbert Montano, the City's Chief Administrative Officer, stated that the move to a new location would cost around $2-300,000, with additional expenses for essential items. Renting a new space is seen as a more cost-effective solution compared to the estimated $30 million needed to repair the current headquarters, which requires major renovations like installing a new air conditioning system and elevator.
