Former military sniper Nicholas Irving, who served six deployments and directly targeted top terrorists, expressed regret and skepticism over the impact of his actions. Irving explained that despite the U.S. military making significant kills, including Osama bin Laden, Saddam Hussein, and al-Zarqawi, a new top threat always emerged. This succession of new targets led him to question the effectiveness of his efforts and the broader war on terrorism. Now retired, Irving gravely warned prospective enlistees to "beware what you wish for." He expressed strong opposition to his son following in his footsteps, stating that he wants to save him from experiencing the lasting psychological toll of warfare that he continues to grapple with. Irving questioned the military's recruitment practices and argued that young enlistees are vulnerable and ill-prepared to fully grasp the reality and long-term effects of what they're signing up for.
