Part 1: King Yella on Getting Arrested for Robbery at 10, Charged with Grand Theft Auto at 15
--------
King Yella discussed his upbringing and association with the Gangster Disciples (GD) in Chicago. He stated that he was born into the GD lifestyle and emphasized that becoming a GD was not the product of a violent initiation or 'jumping in' as is common in Los Angeles gangs but rather a complex initiation based on learning literature and understanding the gang's workings. He credited the change in the public's awareness and perception of Chicago's gang culture to the rise of rap artists like Chief Keef and the wider exposure of gang life through social media platforms like Instagram. King Yella also shared his journey towards becoming a rapper, revealing he thought he would be a singer initially. Despite his past, he expressed that he is currently focusing on being a good father to his six biological children and stepchildren.
