Comedian Aries Spears discussed his decision to wear blackface on the cover of his comedy special, stating that it was more than just him putting on a costume. Spears explained that the cover was a satirical commentary on Hollywood's representation of Black people, referencing the times when Black actors were required to wear blackface in the past. His act was a critique of the entertainment industry's expectation that Black entertainers must constantly maintain a jovial demeanor to be accepted and deemed non-threatening. The blackface, he said, was an 'ode to what Hollywood used to do.' Despite the controversy that often surrounds modern usage of blackface, Spears revealed that there was no backlash when his special aired on Showtime over a decade ago. He remains firm in his decision and stands behind all the performances and gestures he makes in his career, even if they may instigate discussions and critique.
