The Black Keys revealed the interesting origin of their band's name. Alfred McMoore, a schizophrenic artist both their families knew, was known for leaving voice messages that frequently included the phrase “black key.” Inspired by this, they chose The Black Keys as their band name. Regarding securing their first-ever record deal, the duo recalled sending demos to various labels, which caught the attention of independent label Alive, who promised to publish their record in exchange for 12 songs. Dan also revealed that having more members made their sound "smaller," which is why they continued as a two-person band even after securing a record deal.
