At the age of 57, Charles Goldsmith found himself facing a harrowing first-time prison experience. Convicted on charges of felony battery with substantial bodily harm, coercion, and a gang enhancement, Goldsmith was sentenced to 2 to 5 years in state prison, while his son received 15 months. Goldsmith’s transition from the outside world to the prison environment was profoundly jarring. His initial fears were partially alleviated when he was assigned a seasoned cellmate, who guided him through the complexities of prison life.

However, Goldsmith’s time behind bars quickly turned dangerous. As a White inmate, he was grouped with other White prisoners, including the Aryan Warriors. Finding himself at odds with the gang, particularly due to disputes over the treatment of younger inmates and his former association with the Hells Angels, tensions escalated. Goldsmith’s son warned him that the Aryan Warriors intended to kill him, a threat that materialized when Goldsmith was attacked with a rock while eating.
