Initially, Boosie was facing a state case and strategized to minimize his time by accepting a plea deal. The deal involved two years of probation with credit for time served, which Boosie was ready to accept. However, right in the courtroom as he was about to take the plea, federal agents intervened, citing federal jurisdiction over the matter. Consequently, Boosie was slapped with a superseding indictment and transferred into federal custody. Within days, he was released with an ankle monitor and was facing up to ten years in federal prison.
