Maryland Governor Wes Moore discussed the devastating collapse of the Key Bridge in Baltimore on March 26th. The tragedy was prompted by a colossal cargo ship, with each of its 4,000 containers weighing up to two and a half tons, striking the bridge and causing it to collapse. The incident resulted in the deaths of six individuals, affected 8,000 jobs, and led to a staggering $15 million daily economic loss. Moore emphasized that the incident was not due to the bridge's condition but rather the immense size and impact of the ship.
Following the disaster, state officials swiftly mobilized resources, including police divers and aerial assets, to manage the crisis and begin recovery efforts. Despite initial estimates suggesting prolonged disruption, the port was reopened in 11 weeks instead of the anticipated 11 months, helping to preserve the state's low unemployment rate. Governor Moore highlighted the state's coordinated response as a case study in disaster management but stressed that rebuilding the iconic Key Bridge remains a priority to restore the critical infrastructure supporting 13% of Maryland's economy.
